We love to recycle and reuse everyday objects and we recently turned our attention to the humble wine bottle and wondered if we could reuse one instead of throwing it in the recycling bin. So here’s our take on what to do with empty vino containers when you have drained the last drop, read our top five wine bottle tips.
- Wine bottle vase: Leave your old wine bottles soaking in hot water to remove all the labels and clean out the inside. Once they’re clean and fresh you can spray the outside with a primer and give the bottles a top coat as well. Create different coloured vases to go around the home and fill them with fresh or dried flowers depending on how you feel.
- Olive oil container: Old wine bottles are the perfect vessels for olive oil or vinegar if you prefer. Again, you can paint the outside in your favourite colour and simply stick a pouring spout in the top. Create a rustic looking olive oil container and try distressing the paint or simply spray it white and write ‘oil’ or ‘vinegar’ on the front with a permanent marker.
- Candle holder: Visit a traditional Italian restaurant and you might find the odd bottle of Rioja, complete with wicker basket, with a candle sticking out the top. Used wine bottles make brilliant candle holders, just ditch the waxy-basket look and paint the bottle silver, red or gold and they’ll be ideal for your Christmas table display.
- Bottle light: Turn a wine bottle into a funky table lamp with a string of small lights and a bit of hard graft. Take the plug off the lights, drill a hole near the base of the bottle (use masking tape to make this easier) and feed the lights down into the bottle until the flex pops out of the hole. Then simply reattach the plug and pull the wire through until all the lights are inside the bottle, plug it in and switch it on for a beautiful feature lamp.
- Coat hook: Cut the necks off four wine bottles at an angle and attach to a backing board to create an unusual coat hanger. Use metal rods fixed to the board to secure the necks of the bottle in place and enjoy a quirky feature that looks amazing on the wall of your home.
